Golden Connection Letter Writing

Fighting Loneliness and Isolation Through Letters

COVID-19 is cutting seniors off from friends and family across the Metro Detroit area. You can combat loneliness and isolation by joining Golden Connection’s letter writing campaign.

Golden Connection Senior Service recently launched Joy for Seniors to help address the social isolation and loneliness experienced by senior citizens in quarantine. Many retirement communities must restrict visitations, interactions and programming to keep residents safe and lower the risk on COVID-19 outbreaks. Therefore, some seniors are not in contact with others, with the exception of some staff and their roommates, if they have one.

To remind residents that they may be isolated but they aren’t alone, Golden Connection is rallying the community to send letters to nursing homes and assisted living centers in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. This can be a simple note, drawing, positive affirmation or poem. It can be typed or handwritten on paper or included in a greeting card. Be sure to write legible, large letters. No attention name needed. Before you mail your letter, take a picture and share it on social media using #goldenconnection #joyforseniorsletters.

It’s important to acknowledge that senior loneliness and social isolation started long before the coronavirus and will remain long after. Golden Connection is committed to continuing Joy for Senior Letters well beyond this pandemic.  We want our seniors to know they are loved and appreciated. We thank them for their contributions in making Detroit what it is today. ~Bernadette Hudgins, founder & CEO of Golden Connection Senior Services

Right now, the campaign is currently sending letters to two facilities: Sunrise of Grosse Pointe Woods on Mack Avenue and Advantage Living Center – Samaritan in Detroit. Ten other facilities have signed on to participate.

You can send your letters to:

Sunrise of Grosse Pointe Woods, C/O Nicole , 21260 Mack Avenue, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236

Advantage Living Centers - Samaritan, C/O Patrice, 5555 Conner St., Detroit, MI 48213
