Falls and Their Impact on Life

With Geoffrey Hoffman, PhD, MPH, University of Michigan School of Nursing

Geoffrey Hoffman, PhD, MPH and Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Nursing discusses his expertise in older adults, the prevalence of and outcomes associated with fall injuries, formal and informal caregiving, and hospital admissions and readmissions due to falls. Dr. Hoffman provides five crucial points of advice in preventing falls, as they pertain to middle age, 65+, and the 80+ demographics. He also addresses the economic impact of falls, citing increasing expenditures throughout the years as they relate to Medicare, hospitals and post-acute care, as well as the effect that the Coronavirus pandemic has on seniors, resulting in additional risk factors.

Dr. Hoffman also mentions the CDC STEADI Initiative, (Stopping Elderly Accidents, Deaths & Injuries) as important educational reference materials for older adults, healthcare providers, and families.
