From Chief Justice to Law Professor

With Marilyn Kelly, former Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court

Marilyn Kelly, retired Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, and Chair of Wayne State University Board of Governors, discusses her career as a teacher, an attorney, a judge, and her involvement in Wayne State University Law School, Detroit, Michigan. Justice Kelly was sworn in as the 99th Justice in 1997, and had worked as an attorney for 17 years on the Michigan Court of Appeals from 1988 to her election to the high court.

As a Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court, Marilyn Kelly has worked both inside and outside of the courtroom to eliminate bias in the legal system. She co-chaired the Open Justice Commission, an organization of the State Bar of Michigan committed to making justice available to all. An important part involved improving the treatment of women in the courts as litigants, attorneys, and jurors. She was also the first woman to be elected to and made President of the Michigan State Board of Education.

In the interview, Judge Kelly also reflects on her bucket list, her health and well being, retirement and interests, and provides advice to retirees.
