Elder Abuse and Seniors
Elder abuse comes in all shapes and forms. Recently, a Texas elected official said that if there are enough beds and ventilators available to treat all who become infected by the coronovirus, they would save the young and let the elderly die. This is obviously the most extreme example of elder abuse, one that we could only have imagined a short time ago as being completely fictitious and out of a science fiction movie.
Elder abuse is rampant with seniors. On the digital front, many who are gracefully greying receive daily calls from the IRS, from the Social Security Administration, and numerous other organizations attempting to gather personal information such as social security numbers, bank account access, and credit card information. These are all scams, most often targeting a vulnerable, less digital-savvy audience.
We often read horror stories where elderly residents of senior living facilities have been sexually assaulted by staff members. There are numerous situations where residents are not properly taken care of, resulting in bed sores, lack of cleanliness and unnecessary falls. Sadly we often tend to warehouse our elderly in this country. Economic abuse is another dire issue. Close family members will often take advantage of an aging parent with the hope of cashing in on an inheritance. One of my Gracefully Greying videos features Supreme Court Justice Megan Cavanagh and Scott Teter from the Michigan Attorney General’s office discussing a task force looking into the abuse of elders by their court appointed guardians and conservators. This is an ongoing issue.
In the coming months, we will be exploring these important topics in more depth through articles, videos and blogs, as we look for ways to help our gracefully greying community live their lives safely and fully.
